Welcome!
Our Journey / Our Legacy
“Dig your well, before you are thirsty”, is what they say. Well, in our case, this popular proverb will have to be tweaked a lot. Because our journey began way before people even knew they would need someone who could help them in filing trademarks and patents.
In times before India got its independence, Mr. Swamirao Ponkshe, a Civil Engineer from the reputed College of Engineering Pune, an innovator at heart, came up with a process to make a well, in the most efficient and effective manner. He didn’t stop at that. Mr. Swamirao Ponkshe went ahead, did extensive research, and filed for his 1st ever patent in the British-ruled India. Yes, our journey started by filing for a patent for our own technology.
He passed on this spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship to his son Mr. Satyavrat Ponkshe, an agriculturist by education and at that time an educationist serving as the Principal of an Agricultural School in Washim, who went on to start in 1965, the organisation that everyone today knows as Bhate & Ponkshe.
Surprised? Well, don’t be! More than a surprise, we look at it as passion. Because when an
agriculturist can pursue Masters in Education and then join hands with another inventor, entrepreneur, and visionary, to start Pune’s most successful patents and trademarks firm, it’s purely the passion that’s shaping the journey. Mr. Satyavrat Ponkshe moved from Washim to Pune with patented inventions and with the intent to file patents for his many creations and commercialise those inventions.
All this while, the other visionary or the other half of this successful partnership, as we call him, was creating his set of milestones. Mr. Madhav Bhate, pursued Electrical Engineering from the reputed College of Engineering Pune and completed it in 1963. His love for the subject made him take up a lecturer’s role at COEP, where he taught for 1 year.
And then came the moment when the paths of these two gentlemen crossed to shape our future. Under the guidance of Mr. Vasant Shridhar Vaidya, Founder of the erstwhile Swastik Rubber Products, Mr. Satyavrat Ponkshe and Mr. Madhav Bhate, came together to start Bhate & Ponkshe on 1st January 1965. Mr. Vaidya also became an angel investor in 1964 to support and empower the endeavours of Mr. Bhate & Mr. Ponkshe.
The duo had immense faith in each other’s capabilities and their partnership took off instantly. While Mr. Bhate was the support system who became the backbone of B&P, Mr. Ponkshe led from the front and laid the groundwork for what B&P has become today.
Mr. Ponkshe also went on to write many popular books that showcased B&P’s immense knowledge and in-depth understanding. Some of his most read titles include Management of Intellectual Property Rights, Rajiv Gandhi: The Pragmatic Prime Minister of India, Success Secrets of Modern Japan, and WTO: India to Benefit the Most. The last one is considered to be a book way ahead of its time that predicted the future of WTO for India.
Being at the forefront of B&P’s operations, Mr. Ponkshe was also appointed on some prestigious committees. Mr. Ponkshe was a regular speaker at the prestigious WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation) and a Member of Indo-Japan Study Committee. Founded in 1979 and having eminent names like Mr. Ratan Tata as a part of it, the Committee worked towards understanding the Japanese model of development that could be implemented in the Indian context. The Committee operated under the purview of the Planning Commission.
From then till now, across 3 generations, every individual at B&P has taken a leaf out of its founders’ passion to support people and their pursuits with our expertise in filing for patents and trademarks. The legacy has led to our uninterrupted partnerships with businesses across generations, who continue to choose us and trust our expertise and honesty.
